KidStart is a cashback service aimed at helping families put money aside for children. TopCashback is often worth checking first for competitive rates, while KidStart can be a useful second account for different retailer offers and its link to Beanstalk’s Junior ISA.

This comparison is for UK parents weighing up cashback rates, retailer coverage and saving for their child. It is a researched guide, not a claim that we have tested every merchant or investment account.

Are KidStart’s cashback percentages lower?

They can be. The reason to compare both services is that KidStart may pay less on a shared retailer offer, while providing another useful route for a merchant or purchase category unavailable on TopCashback.

We have not performed a complete, same-day comparison of every retailer, so this is not a measured claim that KidStart always pays less. Rates change, and new-customer offers, exclusions and maximum rewards can make headline percentages misleading.

MoneySavingExpert’s comparison reports that TopCashback had the highest rate in over 70% of its checks. That supports checking it early, but does not settle every KidStart comparison. Read our TopCashback review for the wider context.

Different merchants can make KidStart useful

A second cashback account is useful when it covers a purchase your usual service does not. MoneySavingExpert highlights KidStart’s availability for many Apple purchases as a reason to check it.

Be precise about the comparison: TopCashback also has an Apple Certified Refurbished offer, with restrictions. An offer for refurbished products is not the same as an offer covering a new product from the Apple Store. This is why we do not label Apple—or any other brand here—as permanently exclusive to one platform.

Search both sites for the exact retailer and product before shopping. Check whether the offer is direct shopping cashback, a gift-card purchase or another arrangement; those can have different conditions.

Why UK parents may like KidStart

KidStart presents shopping rewards around a clear family goal: building savings for children. Its site also publishes shopping ideas and money-saving articles for parents, which can be useful starting points when planning family purchases.

The family focus may help you keep small rewards separate from everyday spending. However, the purpose of the account does not make a lower cashback rate better value automatically. Compare what you receive and where you want the money to go.

How KidStart cashback works with Beanstalk

Shop through KidStart’s retailer link and follow the offer conditions. Rewards initially appear as pending while the retailer checks the purchase. Once confirmed and paid to KidStart, they become cleared savings.

Beanstalk says linked cashback is paid into the child’s Beanstalk Junior ISA at the start of the month once there is at least £5 in cleared KidStart savings. Pending rewards are not money you can rely on yet. Check account-linking instructions and current payout rules before joining.

What is the Beanstalk Junior ISA?

Beanstalk offers a stocks and shares Junior ISA, rather than an ordinary cash savings account. Contributions are invested in its available funds. The app also offers family contribution tools, round-ups and one-off or regular top-ups.

Investments can fall as well as rise, and your child could get back less than was paid in. Cashback earned from shopping and investment returns are different things: neither a cashback percentage nor an illustration of growth is a guaranteed investment return.

Fees to include in your comparison

Beanstalk’s published fee is 0.5% of account value a year, plus underlying fund charges listed at 0.12%–0.15% a year. These are separate charges: do not read 0.5% as the entire investment cost. Check the latest fund documents and any other applicable charges before opening or transferring an account.

Compare Beanstalk with other Junior ISA providers on total fees, investment choice and service—not just the cashback connection. There is no need to choose an investment provider solely because you like its shopping rewards.

Junior ISA access and allowance

GOV.UK lists a £9,000 Junior ISA allowance for the 2026/27 tax year. The total is shared across a child’s cash and stocks and shares Junior ISAs, including contributions from other people.

The money belongs to the child and normally cannot be withdrawn until age 18. At 18, they can decide what to do with it. A Junior ISA therefore is not suitable for money you may need for nursery bills or other near-term family costs. Tax treatment depends on circumstances and rules can change.

How to compare a purchase fairly

  1. Find the best overall price, including delivery, before considering cashback.
  2. Look up the same retailer and purchase category on KidStart and TopCashback.
  3. Check customer eligibility, voucher-code restrictions and excluded spending.
  4. Compare the expected pound amount rather than just the headline percentage.
  5. Choose one cashback route for that purchase and keep the order confirmation.

For example, on £100 of eligible spending, 2% cashback would be £2 and 5% would be £5. These are hypothetical rates, not live offers. A retailer with no cashback may still be cheaper overall.

Do not assume clicking through both platforms earns both rewards. Cashback depends on tracking and retailer approval, and may be declined. Buy only what you already need and follow the selected retailer’s tracking guidance.

Our view: useful alongside TopCashback

KidStart is worth considering if you want a family-focused cashback service, find a relevant offer there, or value its connection to children’s saving. TopCashback remains worth comparing for the rate available on the same purchase.

Use the platform with the better eligible offer for your needs. Decide separately whether Beanstalk’s costs, investments and Junior ISA access restrictions suit your family.
