A wedding wish list can save you money before anyone buys you a gift. Start with the venue’s quote, cross off what is already included and shortlist only the items you still need. The useful comparison is the cost of getting each item onto the table and off it again.

Keep your shopping checklist separate from your gift list
Use a private checklist for the things you need by the wedding morning. For each item, write down the quantity, maximum spend, who is bringing it and when it must arrive. Keep quotes from other shops and hire companies alongside your Amazon shortlist. A saved item is a price to compare, not a commitment to buy.
Use the Amazon Wedding List for gifts you and your partner would actually like. You can share the list with family and friends; check its visibility before you send the link. Include a range of prices and make gifts optional. If the ceremony depends on an item arriving, assign it to someone rather than hoping a guest will buy it.

Wedding essentials: what to buy, borrow or leave with the venue
- Tables: Count tables for number holders and small vases, and count guests for place cards. Ask whether linen, glassware and holders are already in the package. Borrow matching jars or buy second-hand if someone can collect and wash them.
- Stationery: A friend with a printer may be able to make a table plan and menus. Price the card, ink, stand and a test print before ordering. One menu per table may be enough.
- Decorations: Shortlist battery candles, signs or reusable fabric only after checking the venue’s rules for flames, wall fixings and confetti. Hiring a backdrop can make more sense than buying one you have to store.
- Day-of kit: Check what you already own: scissors, spare pens, envelopes and a sewing kit can go in one labelled box. Give it to someone who knows where it belongs.
- Food, drink and staff: Get written prices for corkage, cake cutting, waiting staff and clear-up. A wish list can organise purchases; it cannot coordinate suppliers or clear a room before the venue’s deadline.
Worked example: should you pay for dressed tables?

Suppose the venue charges £12 per table to supply, place and collect number holders and bud vases. Eight tables cost £96. Your alternative is £24 for holders, £32 for vases and £8 delivery: £64. The potential saving is £32 for the whole wedding, not £32 per table. These are example figures, not supplier quotes.
Ask who will unpack, place and collect the pieces. If the venue charges £40 to set up outside decorations, your £64 option becomes £104: the venue package is £8 cheaper. If a willing friend can do it within the access window at no extra cost, buying keeps the £32 saving.
When does a wedding planner earn their fee?
If the main job is choosing a guest book, menus and table accessories, you can usually handle the shopping yourselves. If several suppliers need access in the same hour, the question is who takes the calls while you’re getting married. Ask the venue what its coordinator actually covers. You may only need help on the day rather than a full planning package.
Before you order
Buy or borrow one sample before multiplying it by the guest count. Check dimensions, delivered price, return terms and arrival date. Allocate set-up and collection to named people. Then revisit the list together: if neither of you would miss something on the day, removing it saves the entire price.
